How do you know which
contract manufacturer
is right for you?
Here are some points to
keep in mind during your
search.
1. Reputation-
Does the company have
a good standing
within
the industry? Can they
provide references?
Reputations are
earned and say
a lot about a company.
Ask around and see what you
can learn about potential
manufacturers.
2. Compatibility
- Do the
facilities, equipment,
processes,
services,
quality and certifications
meet your needs?
Does their corporate
philosophy match yours?
3. GMP
Certification -
The NNFA GMP Certification
Program
is
designed to verify
compliance of
member suppliers of
dietary supplements
with a standardized
set of good
manufacturing practices
(GMPs). This program
ensures
that all elements
of the manufacturing
process are
reviewed and that
processes are sufficiently
controlled
so products meet
their purported
quality.
4. Capacity - Does
the manufacturer
have the capacity
to
meet your sales
demands?
5. Commitment - How
valued is your business?
Will you and your
products be a priority?
6. Communication - Does
the manufacturer
have an
infrastructure that
allows them to provide accurate,
comprehensive and
timely information?
Does your
point of contact
stay in touch with
you and understand
your goals?
7. Cost - Cost
is, of course, very
important. But do
not base
your decision solely
on cost. A less-expensive
manufacturer
might mean a smaller staff, and
less people to work
on
your project.
Quality and quality
control should
be the
highest priorities.

How Dietary Supplements

Mark

Spending

research
from
the Lewin

shown
that spending
pennies

House, Senate Conference
Rejects Expanded FTC Powers
Victory
for NPA, Industry, Thanks
to Strong
Grassroots,
Lobbying Effort
(June
25, 2010)
In another
victory for
Natural Products
Association
(NPA)
members and
the industry,
early this morning,
conferees on
the Wall
Street Reform
bill (S. 3217)
decided not
to include in
the final
legislation
sweeping new
powers for the
Federal
Trade Commission.
Such additional
authority very
likely
would have
led to advertising
rules on the
industry that
would have
undercut the
protections
of the Dietary
Supplement
Health and Education
Act (DSHEA).
"This has
been one of
the top legislative
priorities for
the NPA for
the last six
months," said
John Gay, NPA's
executive
director and
CEO. "I am proud
of the way our
members responded
to our calls
to write their
senators and
representatives,
and to urge
their customers
to do the same.
I am also
proud of the
hard work put
in by our staff
and
lobby team.
Good grassroots

| Harvard
researchers conduct a real-world
test of soda taxes
Los Angeles Times
(June 17, 2010)
Another
day, another study on
soda taxes.
But this one isn't based
on mathematical models
or unreliable food frequency
questionnaires. This
time, researchers at
Harvard implemented
a temporary soda tax
in the cafeteria
of the school's
Brigham and Women's
Hospital in Boston.
Then they waited
to see whether actual
people changed
their drinking
habits.
It turns out that
they did. During a
four-week period when
the price of a
20-ounce bottle of
soda went up by 45
cents -
which amounted
to a 35% price increase
- sales fell by 26%.
Meanwhile, sales
of bottled diet soda
rose by 20%.
(The researchers
said they were unable
to change the
prices of fountain
drinks, so those soft
drinks were not
subject to the
tax.)

Fusion's Good Problem
In
this day and age, it is rare
to see a company touting
growth and the inherent
"good problems" that go
with it.
Fusion stands amongst
the few who can, and we
are not
complaining one bit. Fusion
Formulations is proud of
virtually
reaching tablet capacity

plugging
in its shiny new high

the growth. This new
press will

Vitamin D: Why You Are Probably
NOT Getting Enough and How That
Makes You Sick
Mark Hyman, MD
Practicing physician
and pioneer in functional
medicine
(May 22, 2010)
What vitamin may we need
in amounts up to 25 times
higher
than the government recommends
for us to be healthy?
What vitamin deficiency
affects 70-80 percent of
the
population, is almost
never diagnosed and has
been
linked to many cancers,
high blood pressure, heart
disease,
diabetes, depression,
fibromyalgia, chronic muscle
pain,
bone loss and autoimmune
diseases like multiple sclerosis?
What vitamin is almost
totally absent from our
food supply?
What vitamin is the hidden
cause of much suffering
that is
easy to treat?
The answer to all of
these questions is vitamin
D. Over the
last 15 years of my practice,
my focus has been to discover
what the body needs to
function optimally. Vitamin
D,
a nutrient (more of a
hormone and gene modulator)
is a
critical, essential ingredient
for health and optimal function.
The problem is that most
of us don't have enough
of it
because we work and live
indoors, use sun block and
can't get enough from
our diet--even in fortified
foods.

| Lots
of Potential for Prebiotics-
But Do Customers Know It?
By Nutritional Outlook staff
U.S.
consumers may not be as well-versed
in prebiotics as they
are in probiotics,
but that could
all change with
a little more
effort to
publicize prebiotics'
benefits, say
industry members.
Nutritional
Outlook recently
caught up with
Pashen Black,
Tate & Lyle's
(Decatur, IL)
marketing communications
manager,
for a quick
chat about the
potential of
prebiotics.
Nutritional
Outlook:
What opportunities
for growth do
you see in the
fiber market?
Pashen Black:
There's definitely
an opportunity to
start selling consumers
on some of the benefits
of prebiotics and
help them understand
what those benefits
are. Until now,
there hasn't really
been as much marketing
by companies of
prebiotics as there
has been of probiotics.

Just When You Thought
It Was Safe To Go Back In
The Water
Written
by Marc Ullman (Monday,
April 19, 2010)
Now
that Senators Hatch and
Harkin, with more than
a little bit of help from
a strong grass roots
reaction,
have persuaded Senator
McCain to pull back
from his overboard/misguided effort
to eliminate steroids
from
dietary supplements by
effectively requiring
FDA pre-
approval of all supplements, you
might think that there's
time to take a breather for
everyone to congratulate
themselves on a "job well
done". The problem is
that if
you did this, you'd be
very wrong. There are
two issues
pending in Congress
right now that warrant
your
immediate attention.

Plans To Limit Amount
Of Salt Allowed In Processed
Foods For Health Reasons
By Lyndsey Layton, Washington
Post Staff Writer
(Tuesday, April 20, 2010)
The
Food and Drug Administration
is planning an
unprecedented
effort to gradually
reduce the salt
consumed each
day by Americans,
saying that less
sodium in everything
from soup to nuts would
prevent thousands of
deaths from hypertension and
heart disease.
The initiative,
to be launched this
year, would eventually
lead to the first
legal limits on
the amount of salt
allowed
in food products.
The government intends
to work with the
food industry and
health experts to
reduce sodium gradually
over a period of
years to adjust
the American palate
to a less
salty diet, according
to FDA sources,
who spoke on condition
of anonymity because
the initiative had
not been formally
announced.
