Vitamin D Supplement Use
Increases 50% Among U.S. Users;
Herbs Slide, Finds Survey

By Shane Starling, February 1, 2011

Vitamin D penetration has jumped 50% in the past two years in the US, according to a new survey of 6000 supplement buyers conducted by product tester and market scrutineer, ConsumerLab.com, that also recorded dwindling herbal interest. Its 105-page report found vitamin D use had skyrocketed, especially among women who also were more likely to use calcium and probiotics, and that omega 3 fish oil supplements were exerting a "growing dominance", used by 75.7 percent of respondents as opposed to 74 percent in 2009. Higher Vitamin D Intake Could Cut Cancer Risk

By Health Day News, February 27, 2011

A new study says it takes far more Vitamin D than initially thought to dramatically cut the risk of several major diseases, including breast cancer. "We found that daily intakes of vitamin D by adults in the range of 4,000-8,000 IU are needed to maintain blood levels of vitamin D metabolites in the range needed to reduce by about half the risk of several diseases -- breast cancer, colon cancer, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes," study co-author Dr. Cedric Garland, a professor of family and preventive medicine at the University of California at San Diego, said in a university news release. Marine-Derived Ingredients Show Functional Promise

By Ben Bouckley, February 16, 2011

New research claims that functional ingredients from marine sources have great potential as healthy additions to our diets, but that further work is needed to purify and characterise bioactive compounds. In a review study currently in press for Food Research International, Ngo et al. (2011) explain that proteins in marine foods contain potential functional food ingredients such as bioactive peptides, which are released during digestion, food processing or fermentation and according to Erdmann et al. 2008, cut the risk of illnesses such as cardiovascular disease. Astaxanthin Shows Potential for Brain Health: Human Study

Daily supplements of astaxanthin - the pigment that gives salmon its pink color - may reduce the abnormal accumulation of compounds associated with dementia, says a new study from Japan.

By Stephen Daniells, February 8, 2011
Twelve weeks of supplementation with astaxanthin were associated with significant reductions in levels of compounds called phospholipid hydroperoxides (PLOOH), known to accumulate abnormally in the red blood cells (erythrocytes) of people with dementia, compared with placebo. MOREMORE

Fusion Formulations is happy to announce that
we are once again expanding our capabilities!

At Fusion Formulations, we are constantly striving to improve our processes and ensure the best customer experience possible. Our most recent move in this direction is the purchase of additional lab equipment. This new equipment will provide us with a full analytical laboratory, for which we have hired a fulltime analytical chemist to operate and manage. This will not only help with the number of tests and types of testing we can do, but it will also help to improve lead times by as much as 10 days! We are thrilled that this new equipment will be ready for use by March 1, 2011.

At Fusion Formulations, our goal remains to produce the highest quality products, quickly and efficiently, at competetitive prices.

Does Sustainable Packaging Drive Consumer Interest?

By Gwynne Rogers, February 1, 2011

Consumers are perhaps more conscious of the environmental impact of packaging than any other part of the product's lifecycle. An empty package is a very tangible reminder of the side effects of consumption and it fills trash and recycling bins quickly.

While consumers want their products protected, more than three-quarters think products are over-packaged, and for some, that changes behavior. More than one-quarter says that when they see something over-packaged, they look for something else to buy. MORE

Growing Supplements Industry Promises a Dose of Beauty

Dubbed cosmeceuticals, pills and powders that claim to deliver everything from longer nails to healthier hair are steadily growing in popularity

By Donna M. Owens, December 29, 2010

Some women are coy about revealing their beauty secrets, but Dana Williams-Johnson happily concedes that she's a product junkie. Inside the Clinton townhouse she shares with her husband, her private bath overflows with health and beauty aids -- hundreds in all. Think teeth whiteners and lip glosses, firming creams and false eyelashes. "I'm a girl who's been obsessed with makeup and beauty products since I was a little kid," says Williams-Johnson, 32, a webmaster for a trade association. "I am not afraid to try new things, to look and feel my best."

In recent years, the product connoisseur has added something new to her arsenal: beauty supplements that promote certain aesthetic benefits. Think longer hair and nails, for instance, or clear, glowing skin. No prescription is required for these supplements, which often come in tablet form, as well as in drinks, powdered mixes, drops and breath sprays, sold at drugstores, cosmetics stores and via the Internet. Perennial Greens

While green foods are a mainstay in the natural product industry, it's still important to stay abreast of innovative delivery systems, formulation techniques and consumer desires.

By Sandy Almendarez

Trends in the nutrition industry are as common as cookies at a holiday party. Current trends on display at SupplySide West in October included antioxidants from "new" sources like corn or olives, gluten-free options, social networks and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

In contrast, one old standby still garners as much attention as the aunt who had too much eggnog at said holiday party: green foods. Green foods, i.e. plant-based nutrition with tons of chlorophyll and health benefits, will always be a topic of interest in this industry for two main reasons: consumers know they need them, and consumers don't get enough in their diets. "Despite diet trends consistently changing opinions over the years, all trends ALWAYS agree that green foods are nothing but beneficial - and the public has ingested and wholly absorbed this information," said Mike Dewey, marketing manager, AlgaeCal. Turmeric Health Benefits: Have a Happy New Year with Turmeric

By Dr. Andrew Weil, December 28, 2010

Looking for a simple New Year's resolution for health?
Add turmeric to your diet.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a culinary spice, a major ingredient in Indian curries, and the source of American mustard's bright yellow color. Used as both medicine and food for centuries, accumulating evidence suggests that this relative of ginger is a promising preventive agent for a wide range of diseases, probably due largely to its anti-inflammatory properties. Natural trumps organic in
cosmetic marketing, says
advertising exec

By Katie Bird, December 6, 2010

The word natural has a powerful positive meaning for consumers, more so than organic, when it comes to cosmetics and personal care products, according to Suzanne Shelton, of the Shelton Group.
The advertising agency focuses on the sustainable space and has run a number of focus groups to identify how receptive consumers are to marketing messages relating to sustainability.

According to Shelton, many consumers misunderstand the terms natural and organic, and believe that natural is the more regulated term.

"Our research shows that over half the population would rather see 100 per cent natural, and only 20 percent of the population would like to see 100 percent organic," she told CosmeticsDesign.com USA. MORE

Americas Healthiest and
Unhealthiest States

By Jim Nash, December 6, 2010

States in New England perform best, while the South still falls behind.
For the second year in a row, residents of Vermont are the healthiest people in the nation, according to a new state-by-state survey by the nonprofit United Health Foundation, which is funded by insurer UnitedHealth Group.

Vermonters may already be celebrating their first place-finish with an invigorating mountain hike. Mississippians, on the other hand, are unlikely to toast their ninth consecutive last-place finish. MORE
